Thanks for the denim quilt pattern. I've been saving my families old jeans for years with this in mind, but have never found a pattern. I just stumbled onto your site and I love it. I made this quilt (my first quilt ever!) in just 2 evenings. One to cut out squares and one to sew and clip it. The only thing I didn't have patience for was washing it more than once :), so I informed them it would get better with every wash. I added embroidery in a couple of squares since I work at EmbroidMe, to personalize it. Thanks again. P.S. I'm in Bakersfield, California. Rebecca

Hi Helen, Thanks for the denim rag quilt pattern. I doubled the size to make it a picnic quilt.  I used a fishing motif and my 33 year old son loved it.  Now I am making them for my other 3 sons and my husband.  I've been collecting used jeans all year and now have enough.  Thanks so much for sharing.  Also, the hint of using denim snips was really helpful. I have a son who spent two years on a mission for our church in Australia.  He loved the country and the people.  That makes this pattern even more special.  He is in Iraq serving in the military at the present time. Thanks again for your help, Julie

Hi Helen, I’ve just finished my rag quilt, thanks to your helpful instructions. It is my first quilt and has brought me much joy and excitement. Have a great day! Trudy

Good grief ... isn't e-mail wonderful!?!?  Here you are in Australia and I am in the state of Virginia in the USA. And you have very kindly supplied me with a pattern for a denim rag quilt. THANK YOU! Ann Ward Hampton, Virginia USA

Dear Helen, Thank you for your warm message. I am from Romania - you know...somewhere in est Europe - and my english is not very well, but I hope you understand what I mean.I buy your denim rag quilt pattern and I loving it! I check up your website periodically for other beautiful things. Thank for inspiration. All the best for you and your family, Mihaela Budui

This Denim Quilt is so "easy" -- and cheap -- to make. All you need are 6-8 pairs of old jeans and 2 metres
or 2
½ yards of flannel fabric. The more variety in jean colours, the more interesting your result will be.

The great thing is that you don't even have to wash
the flannel fabric. Infact, it is very important that you
don't" wash the fabric. This means you can get
started straight away!

Best of all, these rag quilts make perfect "masculine" quilts so, they make an ideal gift for husbands, brothers, uncles, sons, newphews, grandfathers and grandsons. I made this denim rag quilt for my husband and he just loves it!

RAG QUILTING

Rag quilting is an old fashioned favorite. The soft
raggy seamed-quilts have become extremely popular in home decor in recent times. Rag quilts serve as great
lap quilts and TV blankets, as well as picnic or travel
rugs and are just perfect to "snuggle" under, while reading your favorite book or magazine.

You can use almost any fabric that will "fray" nicely
for your rag quilt. Rag quilts can be made from flannel, homespun, polar fleece, new denim or as in this example, recycled jeans. It's best to choose fabric with a loose type of weave that will ravel and fray easily. Using a variety of flannels or homespuns and combining
different plaids will give a great country look.

A nice quilt can be made with old Jeans on one side
and flannel on the back as shown in this example. I chose to use old jeans because of the great warmth
and extra durability provided. If using recycled jeans
or new denim there is no need to add batting. The
quilt is plenty "warm" enough.

Using this "raggy strip" technique, the blocks in this
type of quilt are sewn with the raw edges out. This means the seams are featured on the front of these simple quilts, instead of hidden away inside.

After the quilt is complete, it is washed. The raw-edged seams become "frayed" and "fluffy", making lines of fuzzy detailing. The result is a delightful three dimensional texture.

Raggy quilts are completed "quickly" because the front and back are stitched at the same time. So, as soon as the front is finished, the whole quilt is ready to enjoy! This quilt is very cosy and warm - a perfect Campfire Quilt!
